Has the 'notion of sin' been lost?

This article from USA Today is so sad, and as a Christian, not all that surprising.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/2008-03-19-sin_N.htm?csp=34

Here's one quote that stood out to me:
"All the Easter eggs and the Easter bunny are even more extraneous to the purpose of Easter than Santa is to Christmas," Mohler says. "At least Santa Claus was based on a saint. I wonder whether even some Christian churches are making the connection between Christ's death and resurrection and victory over sin — the linchpin doctrine of Christianity."

It's sad to say, but part of me feels that this "lost notion of sin" has to happen. The farther we get from the truth of Christ on the cross and the more people are faced with a "personally sinless" world the more that truth will impact them when they do believe the entirety of scripture.
