On the way out of the parks, we stopped for a quick hike to the Mark Twain tree stump. Although it doesn't sound all that exciting, the stump has a set of stairs so you can walk right up on top of it. The kids made several trips up and down those steps!
A little side history we found interesting...the Twain tree was cut down and slabs of it were taken to east coast cities so masses of people who had never seen a giant sequoia could understand how massive the trees were. This helped lead people to be in sympathy with the saving of the trees and to the making of Sequoia National park. By sacrificing one tree, we can all enjoy the sequoia groves now.
